William "Tootie" Carter

Director of Business Operations, Memorial Student Center

Career background

I have been employed at Marshall University for 28 years. My entire employment history has been rooted in the Student Center. My first job at MU was as a student employee, followed by roles including student manager, interim manager, conference assistant, administrative assistant, program assistant, business manager and now director. Additionally, I worked at Macy's for over 10 years. I also currently serve as a part-time fitness instructor at the Huntington YMCA.

Educational background

I am a graduate of Man High School. I initially began my education with plans to become a teacher — my father, sister, brother-in-law, niece and nephew are all public educators — but I realized teaching wasn't for me. I then considered physical therapy, but that wasn't the right fit either. Ultimately, I accumulated enough hours for an RBA, which led me to continue my pathway at Marshall.

What do you do on a daily basis and overall?

I manage the operations of the Student Center, which includes ensuring contract compliance with the bookstore, food services, ATM services, and vending. I handle scheduling for campus-wide events and oversee maintenance and renovation projects within the building. Overall, my role involves ensuring that campus facilities run smoothly, supporting student workers, coordinating events and contributing to Marshall's ongoing growth and development.

What do you hope is the impact of your work?

I hope my work helps create a welcoming, efficient and vibrant campus environment where students, employees and the community feel at home. By maintaining and improving our facilities, I aim to support student success, foster community engagement, and contribute to Marshall's continued growth and positive reputation.

What do you love about Marshall and about your job?

I love Marshall because it's been my home for over two decades — it's where I found my purpose and community. I love my job because it allows me to give back to the campus that has shaped my life. Seeing students and employees enjoy the facilities gives me a deep sense of pride.

What are some of your favorite Marshall memories?

Some of my favorite memories include working in the Student Center as a student, being part of the team during the lobby renovation, and witnessing how the campus has evolved over the years. These experiences have strengthened my connection to Marshall and its community.

Another memory was during the filming of "We Are Marshall," just simply being on site when everything was going on. I was lucky enough to give the film crew a campus tour of facilities prior to filming.

What have you learned that you wish everyone knew?

I've learned that hard work, dedication and a positive attitude can open many doors. I wish everyone knew how important it is to be flexible and open to new opportunities — sometimes, the path you least expect can lead to your greatest fulfillment. Marshall has taught me that growth often comes from embracing change and remaining committed.
