Letter from the President

Dear Marshall Family,

Summer has arrived at Marshall University, and while the rhythm of campus life shifts, the energy has not diminished. It's simply evolved. The walkways may be quieter, but this is far from a slow season. Across every corner of our campus, important work continues: Teams are reflecting, recalibrating and readying us for the future with focus and determination.

Our physical landscape is also evolving. Nearly 1,000 alumni and community members participated in our fourth annual Community Cares Week, brightening up our campus. Holderby Hall has officially come down, opening space for new possibilities.

Plans for the Fourth Avenue IDEA District continue to advance, an ambitious initiative that will blend education, entrepreneurship and economic vitality right in the heart of Huntington. It reflects the bold spirit of Marshall and the future we're building together.

I'm proud to be personally involved with initiatives like Ascend WV, which provides financial incentive and free outdoor recreation to workers locating in West Virginia, and First Ascent, a Marshall-WVU partnership that gives recent college grads mentorship, networking and outdoor recreation opportunities.

Both efforts help professionals and new graduates build meaningful lives and careers right here in the Mountain State.

These efforts not only attract new talent, they also help retain the incredible talent we're developing at Marshall and across West Virginia.

Summer is also a season for reflection. Whether you're hiking a mountain trail, working remotely from a riverside town, or simply enjoying a quiet sunrise with a cup of coffee, I hope you take a moment to appreciate how special it is to be part of the Herd and to consider the exciting opportunities ahead.

At Marshall, every season adds a new chapter to our story. At the heart of that story is you — our students, faculty, staff, alumni and supporters. Your presence, passion and belief in our mission are what make these Marshall Moments possible.

Thank you for being part of this journey. I look forward to welcoming you back to campus this fall as we write the next chapter together.

Go Herd!

Brad D. Smith, President
